Help Gear a Squishy Newcomer for 60+

Returning player here on his second day, glad to be back!

Any veterans here able to help outfit a newcomer? Much of my old gear is probably obsolete, but I don't know which to toss.

I'm looking for basic advice on found items, since I'm too poor and too new to rely on anything requiring raiding or reputation. That's fine: it looks like Outlands drops will quickly outclass my old Molten Core and Blackrock gear.

I'm playing a PvE warlock who runs solo or in small groups. Here are the kinds of questions I'm facing:

  • how do I value +Spell Power versus +Critical Strike?

  • how useful is +Intellect in terms of damage?

I see that it adds to Critical Strike; is an item with 10 more intellect as useful as one with 3 more Critical Strike, or Spell Power?

  • Is there any need in Burning Crusade for my old Molten Core resist-fire gear?

Many thanks!|||Quote:

Outland will indeed make your level 60 gear obsolete. I had gotten rid of my MC gear by level 62, my Aurastone Hammer by 64. You will not need your MC fire resist gear anymore...even if you go into the few resist fights in BC you'll want much better resist gear than you currently have. I'll let the dps specialists attack the nuts and bolts numbers here.|||the stats you need to focus on are dictated a bit by the build you are running. someone might need to correct me on this but IIRC you need a higher crit rating for destro but affliction requires more SP.

if you're not sure which build you want, take a look at the link below. it nicely lists the strengths and weaknesses of the different talent trees since alot has changed since TBC came out.

Great - you just freed a bag for me, thank you!

I will miss the Terror-when-hit proc of the Deathmist set, but the new gear outshines it in every other way.

Good point. I'm embarrassed to post my build, since it would make DPS fiends cringe. But I'm running largely solo (I love teaming, but I have blocks of one and two hours in the day for play, not suited to raiding), so I need more survivability:

I went Demonologist to Felguard and added basic Affliction, and now will go to Shadowburn in Affliction. I know nothing about Metamorphosis yet; if it looks like a good match for me, I'll go that route. If not, I'll get Ruin and Amplify Curse.

My damage comes mostly from Affliction, and I have little bonus to increased crit. Does that suggest I should lean toward Spell Power?

How do you weigh the value of an item with high Stamina vs slightly higher Spell Power?|||Stamina isn't a priority for DPS, unless you're doing endgame PvP. In endgame raids, if you're getting beaten on, you're probably going to be dead regardless of how much stamina you have. OK, it might give you a slightly higher chance of surviving, but Stamina will come as it comes. Don't worry about it, unless, as I said, you're looking more at PvP (BGs, Arenas) than you are at endgame Raiding.|||Something else to consider is that simply by doing the Outlands quests you end up better geared at 58-60 than you would with old world gear (and the same will happen at 67-70 with Northrend gear). I'd say just run the quests and each piece that is warlock appropriate, you will probably replace it, regardless of the specific stats - it's still going to outclass most of what you already have.|||Quote:

It's for questing. It helps a bit with survivability, but it's mostly a mana battery via Life Tap. I don't need to rest very often.

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks.

I've read suggestions of staying in the Outlands until 70 if you need gold, which I do (I'm no farmer, but I'd like to afford basics, like mount training, and I'm frighteningly poor).

But your note above makes it sound better to go to Northrend sooner. Any advice there?|||Quote:

At 68, go to Northrend. You haven't told us your faction, so....

If you're Horde, Howling Fjord is a nicer starting place to leap off from. I suggest doing it first, then travelling to Borean Tundra.

I believe it's the opposite for the Alliance but I got my poor, abused Alliance toon barely onto Northrend before I started asking myself why I was doing that, all over again...|||It really depends on what you want out of it - me, I prefer to level a bit faster, so heading to Northrend for the final 2-3 levels leading into 70 made more sense - the experience is radically better and the quest rewards a shift upwards, just like the old world to Outland jump.

I think the gold just comes along with it, honestly. I didn't see much advantage to being in Outland for gold after 68 once LK came out - the rewards were better in Northrend, plus if you've a gathering profession, then you have that to work with as well.

It's somewhat unfortunate that the rewards didn't stay somewhat in tune from one expansion to the next - it was such a huge leap upwards that it essentially meant the last couple of levels were better off spent doing the early material of the next expansion, rather than the final material of the previous one. A lot depends on what you want out of it - it sounds like you stopped playing before BC, right? If that's the case, then you might take a bit longer to see some of the 'endgame' content from that expansion, just to see it. But if you want to progress as quickly as possible to current endgame, then spending time in Outland from 68-70 ends up being a bit of wasted time, since you'll want the better gear from Northrend sooner rather than later.|||Quote:

I found the Tundra alot better for Alliance than the Fjord because there was alot less moving about and I didn't have a flying mount the first time I quested there.
